New or refurbished smartphone: which should you choose?
A refurbished smartphone costs less than a new one and avoids manufacturing a new device. A new one offers an intact battery and a longer warranty. Both choices have their merits. At GSMCLINIQUE, we have been repairing phones for over twenty years and our stores sell both. At MonMobileMoinsCher, we only sell new products, but here is an honest comparison to help you decide.
What "refurbished" means
A refurbished phone is a used device that has been inspected, cleaned, repaired if necessary, and put back on sale by a professional. Its condition varies depending on the seller and the stated grade ("perfect condition", "very good condition", etc.). Two refurbished devices of the same model can therefore be very different, especially in terms of the battery.
Criterion 1: the battery
This is the most concrete difference in daily use. A battery loses capacity with charge cycles. On a new one, it starts at 100%. On a refurbished one, always ask for the guaranteed remaining capacity and if the battery has been replaced. A replacement costs a few dozen euros in the workshop: factor this into the calculation if the battery is already worn out.
Criterion 2: the warranty
In France, a new device purchased from a professional benefits from the two-year legal guarantee of conformity. For a used item, including refurbished products, this period can be reduced to one year by the sales contract. Check this point in the seller's terms. Our own warranties are detailed on the After-Sales Service, warranties and returns page.
Criterion 3: updates
A phone receives security updates for a period set by the manufacturer. A refurbished model released three years ago has already consumed part of this support. Before buying, look at the release year of the model, not just its condition. A new one from the current generation gives you the full support period.
Criterion 4: the price
Refurbished is generally cheaper for the same model. But compare like with like: a high-end refurbished model from two or three years ago versus a recent mid-range new one, at the same price. For small budgets, new smartphones exist under €250: browse, for example, our selections under €200 and from €200 to €300.
Criterion 5: the environment
The manufacturing of a smartphone weighs heavily on its environmental impact. Buying refurbished avoids manufacturing another one: it is a serious argument. If you buy new, the main thing is to keep your phone for a long time, protect it with a case and tempered glass, and have it repaired rather than replaced at the first breakdown.
Our opinion as repairers
- Choose refurbished if your budget is tight, if you are aiming for a high-end model from a previous generation, and if the seller clearly guarantees the condition of the battery.
- Choose new if you keep your phones for a long time, if you want the two-year legal guarantee and the full update period, or if you are aiming for a recent model, rarely available refurbished at its launch.
